Cortisol

Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. It is often referred to as the "stress hormone" because it plays a role in the body's response to stressful situations. While cortisol is essential for many bodily functions, including regulating blood sugar levels and suppressing inflammation, chronically high levels of cortisol can have negative effects on mood and mental health.

When cortisol levels are high for prolonged periods, it can lead to a range of mood problems, such as anxiety, depression, and irritability. This is because cortisol can interfere with the balance of other neurotransmitters in the brain that are important for regulating mood, such as serotonin and dopamine. High cortisol levels can also damage or shrink the hippocampus, a region of the brain that is crucial for memory and emotional regulation.

In addition to mood problems, high cortisol levels can also lead to other physical and mental health issues, such as weight gain, impaired immune function, and increased risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Cortisol levels can be tested through a simple blood test or through saliva.
